Most SEO writing courses are not created for writers. They’re designed for marketers and business owners and will often suggest that these people outsource their SEO content.
If you’re already a good writer, you won’t learn much from a typical SEO course by Neil Patel, SEMRush or Hubspot. They only cover the basics and/or they cover things that writers don’t need to know.

But when I first got into SEO writing, I noticed that most of these courses were made for business owners and/or marketing managers - not for professional writers.

Even the Best SEO Content Writing Courses Weren’t Made for Writers
Over the years, I’ve learned so much about SEO writing, really out of necessity in my work. I was an authority in the health and nutrition field, which was great, but clients were also asking me to optimize my writing for SEO (which I had no idea how to do).
So, when I was trying to figure out where to learn SEO content writing for free, I came across several free courses, blogs and lead magnets, which was awesome!
But then, when I would open up these SEO writing courses, I realized they were not tailored to the needs and background knowledge of writers.
The course content was full of techy stuff, full of management tactics, and frankly, full of things I didn’t need to know about SEO.
As you can imagine, I spent a lot of time with these courses, but most of the information was inapplicable to what I needed to know as a writer - especially as a writer who wanted to work for clients.
Yes, I definitely gained a ton of amazing background knowledge, but when it came to the instructors speaking my (non-techy) language and helping me get into the world of SEO writing, these courses fell short.
Most free SEO content writing courses won’t tell you how to create high-quality, creative and authentic content. And they definitely don’t teach you how to find work as an SEO writer.

When you look for SEO content writing courses, you might see that most offer a certificate of completion. This makes many people wonder if you need an SEO writing certificate to be competitive in the field.
But guess what: There is currently no regulatory body that controls SEO credentials. What do we mean by that? There is no formal organization that requires SEO certificates. So, when you see that a course offers a SEO certificate upon completion, all it is is a sheet of paper that says you finished their course.
These certifications really hold no weight in terms of your ability to write for SEO and/or your marketability. They also won’t help you land better SEO jobs.
